Project Intent Jamie Stitzer
The focus of the semester was to develop program elements that allow the primary school to function as an amenity in the community. For the city of Los Angeles a project like this can serve as a model for a new approach to urban design. The Hybrid Building can become not an anomoly within the city fabric, but a standard -- a standard that utlizes resources wisely and provides for the future through design. In my project I focus on the site context. The primary center is a new typology in education, and the hybrid building is a new typology for Los Angeles. The process of designing for both the school and the community left much room for investigation into park and play space. I took an urban approach to landscape, utilizing latice work and vegitation screens. The screens become part of the liveliness of the space. The design process was also greatly affected by program study. The typical goals of primary education led to the development of classroom clusters. The cluster allows for maximum variety and interaction within the school and the class itself. The glass wall that consitutes the south and east elevations asserts the school's presence in the city. The glass also has the hybrid use of a ventilation system for the classrooms. The project can be simply broken down into its conceptual elements: 1) the 'wall' that forms the exterior edges of the school (the school buildings themselves reinforce the 'wall' and begin to define the play space and the inetrior), and 2) the 'screen' further defines the play space and the park as well as introduces a laticed greenspace element which defines the circulation and adds greenery much needed in the area, .
Co-Use Program
As a hybrid building the school shares uses and portions of the site with additional program, including a public park, housing, a community center, and an after-school center used by the public. The shared uses of the assembly room and library contribute to the nighborhood as a whole by providing a standard for increased interaction among the people. The dual entry sequence is key to my approach to Hybrid design. The park is used during school hours, so the public entrance allows a shared site, while the school itself remains secure.
