With the growing sophistication of space experiments, and the need to handle the huge amounts of data from large format CCDs, on-board data reduction is becoming an important issue. Specialized image processors, and parallel computers handle this type of problem in ground based situations, and are beginning to find applications in space as well. A study of the present and future requirements for on-board data processing could be undertaken during the assessment stage.
