Pre-Crash Radio Dialogue of SwissAir Flight 111

This page gives access to the DMT analysis of one dialogue, described in the table at the bottom of the page. Click on items to view the analysis.

Situation: This commercial flight suddenly declares an emergency over Canada, with smoke in the cockpit.

Participants: The pilot of the aircraft, and Air Traffic Control

Acknowledgment: The text was put onto the Internet by the CBC broadcasting company of Canada.

Web Access to the Source: http://www.radio.cbc.ca/news/swissair/transcript.html has the dialogue. There are numerous other web pages about this flight.

Features of this dialogue: The tragic subject matter sets this dialogue apart. Although it appears that the dialogue was cut off by the crash, it was not. Other web pages establish that the crash was significantly later. The cause of the cutoff is unknown, but it may have been a loss of electrical power in the aircraft. This is a reminder that sometimes lack of a response does not represent refusal of a game act.
