The Friendship 7 Re-entry Dialogue
An introduction to this dialogue: This dialogue is an excerpt from the Friendship 7 mission transcript, an early solo flight with John Glenn. The participants are designated individuals: the Command Module Pilot (P) in the spacecraft and the Capsule Communicator (CC) on earth. There is in fact a potential emergency, but it does not enter into the conversations except for the decision on the ground to not jettison the retro pack. Glenn requested an explanation but finally did not get one. Other anomalies were discovered after the flight, including a computer program error, possibly an error of use, that caused the spacecraft to land about 40 miles off target instead of the estimated 1 mile off target.
Features of this dialogue and its analysis: The analysis shows that a large amount of attention is being given to precise, clear communication.
