The Aurelius Ensemble will present Antojitos Latinos - a selection of Latin American music on Thursday July 22 and Friday July 23, 1999, at 8pm in Killian Hall. The ensemble will present works by Astor Piazzolla, Heitor Villa-Lobos and George Gershwin, and the American premiere of Jose Elizondo's Danzas Latinamericanas. Mexican composer Elizondo will open the concert with a brief introduction to the defining characteristics of Latin American music. The concerts will take place, both nights, at MIT's Killian Hall (140 Memorial Drive, a 5-minute walk from the Kendall T stop on the Red Line.) The concert dates and times are Thursday, July 22, 1999, 8pm; and Friday July 23, 1999, 8pm. The concerts are free with a suggested donation of $5. The Aurelius Ensemble, founded summer 1998, is named after Marcus Aurelius Thompson, internationally acclaimed violist and chamber music player, to honor his 25 years of exemplary service in mentoring and educating young musicians at MIT. Since its inception, the ensemble has presented several highly successful theme concerts. Antojitos Latinos will present guest performer, Wilson Hsieh (SM & SB 1988, PhD 1995), violist and professor of Computer Science at University of Utah, a protégé of Thompson. Jose Elizondo (b. 1972) studied composition with Edward Cohen and Peter Child at MIT (SB 1995), where he received degrees in Music, Humanities and Engineering. Best known for his celebrated orchestral suite Estampas Mexicanas, his compositions have been featured at the Banff International Festival (Canada, 1998), the Ayton Castle Music Festival (Scotland, 1998), the Hispanic Heritage Festival (USA, 1998), the Laboratorio Novamusica Contemporary Music Series (Italy, 1997), the ADUR Festival (England, 1998), among others. -- THE END --
