Krzysztof Burdzy, University of Washington, Essential uses of probability in analysis

Abstract: Probability theory is a science, that is, scientists calculate probabilities of real events. Probability theory is also a purely mathematical tool, used as an element of rigorous proofs, with no relation to real universe. I will discuss two or three (depending on time) examples of probabilistic techniques used in analysis. I call them "essential" because I do not know equivalent analytic techniques.
