Abstract: In this talk I will discuss some recent research trends in algebraic topology that have been motivated and influenced by string theory and quantum field theory in physics. These will include the investigation of algebraic structure in the homology of spaces of loops and paths in manifolds ("string topology"), the homotopy theoretic study of moduli spaces, and the classification of topological field theories.
