Abstract: We will outline a proof that the Weeks manifold is the unique lowest volume closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold. The proof, the culmination of many years of work by many people, involves a remarkable interplay involving both very elementary ideas and very deep work in topology and geometry as well as rigorous computer assistance.
