Roderick P. HartHart to Chair Fellows Selection Committee

Roderick P. Hart, Liddell professor of communication and professor of government at the U of Texas at Austin, will head the 1998 ICA Fellows Nominating Committee.

"The importance of the ICA Fellow's Award lies not so much in honoring specific individuals, although that is important, but in honoring the scholarly enterprise itself," said Hart in accepting the committee chairmanship. "We honor individuals because it is so hard to honor abstract concepts like 'scholarly integrity,' 'the pursuit of truth,' and 'lifelong learning.' And so, ICA members should nominate those individuals who best epitomize the values that they, the membership, hold dear. It is values like these that make a scholarly community both scholarly and a community." Any active ICA member may submit a nomination.

Nomination materials must be sent to arrive no later than Monday, February 3, 1998, addressed to ICA Fellow Nominations, International Communication Association, P. O. Box 9589, Austin, TX 78766, USA. Street address for overnight mail is 8140 Burnet Road, Austin, TX 78757.

The nomination package must include (1) a letter of nomination that summarizes the nominee's area of specialty; (2) a current curriculum vitae, and (3) a statement of service to ICA. The Committee also is asking nominators to provide three to five letters to support nominations. These letters should speak to the scholarly distinction of the nominee so that current Fellows can make a more informed decision on nominees for this prestigious award. Any questions about the kinds of material or documentation required should be directed to Bob Cox, Executive Director, at ICA headquarters, 512-454-8299; icahdq@uts.cc.utexas.edu.

ICA Bylaws provide that all living ICA Fellows constitute a selection committee for the original screening process, and that only the names of those nominees with support of a majority of the Fellows be submitted to the ICA Board of Directors for final balloting. Recipients of the award will be announced at the ICA annual business meeting in Jerusalem.

According to the Bylaws, the award "is primarily a recognition of distinguished scholarly contributions to the broad field of communication, as defined by the constituent interests of the ICA Membership. Thus, the primary consideration for nomination to ICA Fellow status is a documented record of scholarship achievement." 1997 recipients of the Fellow award were Akiba Cohen, Tel Aviv U, and Byron Reeves, Stanford U.
