Biographical information for Dr. John Silvester

John Silvester, vice provost of scholarly technology and professor of electrical engineering systems, has been named chairman of the board of the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives, which is the organization building the California part of Internet2. "Dr. Silvester has the academic background, high-performance networking experience and enthusiasm to lead CENIC into the new millennium," said Thomas West, president of CENIC. CENIC is a not-for-profit corporation formed by Caltech, California State University, Stanford Universtiy, the University of California and USC. Silvester is the author of more than 100 technical papers and was recently appointed director of education for the Communications Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He is a member of the advisory board of the USC Advanced Biotechnical Consortium. Born in Kent, England, he received his M. A. in mathematics and operations research from the University of Cambridge; an M. S. in statistics and computer science from West Virgina University; and a Ph.D. in computer science from UCLA.
