Professor Geoffrey Cowan Geoffrey Cowan, former director of the Voice of American and The International Broadcasting Bureau, is Dean of the Annenberg School for Communication. Professor Cowan has been active in almost every facet of communications -- as a communication law attorney, playwright, newspaper columnist, television talk-show host, best-selling author, award-winning teacher, and Emmy Award-winning television producer. He is author of the major biography, The People v. Clarence Darrow.

Professor Anthony Giddens Anthony Giddens is the Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is the author or editor of over thirty books. His recent books, including The Third Way (Polity Press 1998) and Beyond Left and Right (Polity Press 1994), have influenced debates about the future of democracy in many countries across the world. Frequently referred to in the UK as Tony Blair's guru, Giddens has made a strong impact on contemporary discussions of globalization.

  Majid Tehranian is a professor at the University of Hawaii and Director of the Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research. He has authored numerous articles and books on global aspects of communication, including his recent book, entitled Global Communication and World Politics: Domination, Development, and Discourse (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 1999).

• Jonathan D. Aronson
  Jon Aronson is Director and Professor of the School of International Relations at USC, and author of numerous articles and books on international dimensions of telecommunication services, trade, and regulation, including (with Peter F. Cowhey) When Countries Talk (Cambridge, MA: Ballinger, 1988).
• Sandra Ball-Rokeach
  Sandra Ball-Rokeach is a professor at the the Annenberg School of Communication, with a joint appointment in Sociology. Her research has focused on interpersonal and collective violence, gender equality, media effects, social movements, and mass media theory. She is presently directing 'The Metamorphosis Project', supported by The Annenberg Center and conducted by the Annenberg School for Communication.
• Sarah Banet-Weiser
  Dr Banet-Weiser is an assistant professor at the Annenberg School of Communication. She completed her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in communication at UC San Diego. Her latest book, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World: Beauty Pageants and National Identity, will be published by the University of California Press in the fall of 1999.
• James R. Beniger
  Dr Beniger is an associate professor of communication and sociology at USC, former President of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, and author of The Control Revolution (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1986).
• William H. Dutton
  Bill Dutton is a professor in the Annenberg School, where he directs the Communication Management Program. He was national director of the UK's Programme on Information and Communication Technologies (PICT), and author of Society on the Line: Information Politics in the Digital Age (Oxford: Oxford Un. Press, 1999).
• Janet Fulk
  Dr Fulk is Professor of Communication in the Annenberg School, focusing on communication management, including technological, organizational, and strategic issues in managing collaborative enterprises.
• Thomas Hollihan
  Professor Hollihan is Associate Dean of the Annenberg School for Communication. He studies the arguments that shape public policy and political discourse.
• Marty Kaplan

• Colleen Keough
  Dr Keough is a Lecturer at the Annenberg School of Communication. She studies organizational negotiations as a form of argumentative discourse th at shapes organizational structures, processes, and relationships.
• James Loper
  Dr James Loper is an Adjunct Professor at the Annenberg School during the 1999-2000 academic year. He has served in a variety of leadership roles in broadcasting and the arts, including his years as manager of KCET TV-Channel 28, in Los Angeles, California, and over a decade as Executive Director of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
• Peter Monge
  Peter Monge is a professor in USC's Annenberg School of Communication, and past President of the International Communication Association. He studies communication networks and their impact on work life and productivity.
• A. Michael Noll
  Michael Noll is a professor in the Annenberg School of Communication, he specializes in information and communication technologies, particularly telephone and television systems. He is a co-founder of The Annenberg School's Telecommunication Studies Group.
• Terhi Rantanen
  Dr Rantanen accepted an appointment to a new position in the LSE's global communication program for the Fall of 1999, and will be able to join the conference to discuss her research on communication in Russia.
• Margaret Scammell
  Dr Margaret Scammell is a lecturer in Media and Communication at the London School of Economics. Her focus is on the globalization/Americanization of political campaigning. She is the co-author (with P. Norris, J. Curtice, and D. Sanders) of On Message: Political Communications and Media Effects in the 1997 British General Election (London: Sage, expected 1999).
  
• Professor Roger Silverstone
  Professor Roger Silverstone holds the Chair of Media and Communication in the Department of Sociology at LSE. • Leslie Sklair
  Dr Leslie Sklair is a reader in sociology at LSE, with a focus on the processes of globalization. He is particularly interested in consumerism within the Third World, having an expertise in China and Mexico. He is the author of Sociology of the Global System (Prentice Hall/Harverster, 1995), and `Globalization and the Fortune 500 in California', International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (1998).
• Douglas Thomas
  Doug Thomas is an Assistant Professor in the Annenberg School of Communication. Dr. Thomas studies the philosophy of human communication. His research includes studies of computer and network `hackers', which he presents in a forthcoming special issue of Information, Communication & Society, focused on computer crime.
