Monkey, pig, deer and crocodile skulls dangle from a rattan rope along the back wall. Locals believe the spirits of these deceased animals reside in their skulls. The spirits are called upon to beckon their brethren before the men set out on a hunt, thereby ensuring success. Unfortunately, some sapau have recently begun selling skulls accumulated over generations to unethical trekkers as souvenirs. This is usually how indigenous cultures disappear. Not in one fell swoop, but piecemeal, skull by skull. More pictures:
