Population Dynamics Research Group

Julie is Research Assistant Professor and the Associate Director of the Population Dynamics Research Group in the School of Policy, Planning, and Development (SPPD) at the University of Southern California. Her areas of research include immigration, race, demography, children, and urban studies. She has been involved in research projects for the John Randolph and Dora Haynes Foundation, Fannie Mae Foundation, National Institute of Health, Ford Foundation, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the California Department of Housing and Community Development, and the USC Center for Urban Education. Recent published journal articles are included in American Journal of Public Health, Housing Policy Debate, and Journal of Housing Research.

She received her sociology doctorate in 2003 at USC and her dissertation is entitled, "The Socioeconomic Progress of Southeast Asian Immigrants across the United States." Her works examine the historical, social, political, and economic context from which Southeast Asians came and subsequently, tracks their socioeconomic progress in the U.S. on multiple indicators with an in-depth analysis on the dynamics of poverty (indicators include educational attainment, English proficiency, labor force participation, occupation, earnings, poverty, household income, household size, homeownership, and public assistance). She also received a MA in sociology and a Masters in Urban Planning from USC and a BA from UC Davis.

Her teaching experience includes both undergraduate and graduate level classes in SPPD and American Studies and Ethnicity. Courses include Urban Demography and Growth, Urban Diversity and Communication, Statistics and Arguing from Data, and Interethnic Diversity in the West.
