| Project Intent Juliet Crowder The Hybrid City Topic Studio requires a unique attitude about the integration of a primary school and the urban setting. The 112th Street Primary School, located in South Los Angeles, provides an opportune environment to improve the relationship between the school, residential community, and commercial street. The site was designed with a berm as a dominant feature that begins on 112th Street with the playfield raised above the parking, and it extends by way of a wall to the other end of the site on South West Blvd. Trees are planted on the berm to create a veil of foliage around the school while also aesthetically benefitting the residential community. The steel structures were designed with flexibility in mind — the concept of courtyard volumes as an extension of the classroom spaces. The courtyards incorporate various shading devices, both manmade and natural.
Co-Use Program
Some ideas tested in this project include the extension of the school to occupy the majority of the site and the addition of a shared multipurpose room and public library to serve as an interface between public and private activities.
