As a photojournalist, Rick was part of two Pulitzer Prize winning teams at the Los Angeles Times, winning for Spot News coverage of the Northridge earthquake and Los Angeles riots. Rick was an individual nominee for the Pulitzer Prize. As a general assignment photographer working in the Metro office, Rick covered a variety of assignments locally as well as around the world and has been recognized locally and nationally for his work. He also has extensive experience as a photo editor and assignment desk editor.

Leaving the Times in 2001, Rick now freelances in Los Angeles as well as teaches photojournalism at USC.

Rick graduated from Pepperdine University with a BA in Journalism and a Masters Degree in Business Administration.

A past president of the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles, Rick now runs their Student Scholarship Fund, which raises money for deserving local photojournalism students. He is also a member of the National Press Photographers Association.

At USC’s Annenberg School for Communication, Rick teaches three photojournalism courses.
