PHIL 500 — Introduction to Contemporary Philosophical Literature

This course is an introduction at an advanced level to prominent philosophers of the last century-plus, and major topics in contemporary philosophy. It is intended for first-year graduate students in philosophy, but does not carry substantial presuppositions of prior study. The topics covered will center on philosophical logic, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of mind. The aim is to impart a basic understanding of some central texts of what has come to be called the “analytic” tradition in philosophy, from Frege (1891) to the present day.

PHIL 530 — Seminar in Law and Philosophy

The seminar will be based on paper presentations by scholars invited from other universities. The purpose of this seminar is to expose the students, in a critical and engaging way, to work in progress done by some of the best scholars in the field. The general topic of the Fall 2009 workshops is the philosophical foundations of language in the law. Invitees include philosophers of language working on law related topics and philosophers of law working in areas that draw on philosophy of language. The invitees will present drafts of their intended contribution to a collection of essays edited by Soames & Marmor (forthcoming by OUP).
