Richard W. Vawter vawter@usc.edu

I am a full time faculty member of the ITP department for the School of Engineering at the University of Southern California. My semester courses present an overview of computer applications found in industry, government, and education. My primary focus is on how Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERP’s) play an important role in today’s organizations and the challenging task of implementing and managing the IS function. Students research systems loaded with SAP’s ERP solution, configuring, as well as, writing ABAP programs to manipulate and streamline the business process. In addition, tools such as Business Warehousing (BW), Customer Relations Management (CRM), and Enterprise Portals are implemented for case companies and configured to interact with established ERP systems.

Background
Prior to the School of Engineering, I was a Computer Systems and Applications Specialist for the University’s Marshall School of Business. In addition to investigating and analyzing various specialized computing options and solutions for academic research, I also administered the e-mail systems and remote access software for the graduate school’s staff, faculty, and students.

From 1983 to 1989, I was employed by Rockwell International as an Aerodynamicist, evaluating the dynamic pressure loads placed upon the Space Shuttle Orbiter during both launch and re-entry. After the Challenger incident, I worked along side a team from NASA on the Crew Egress Project, designing a system that would allow the astronauts to escape during a "controlled emergency descent".
